Abstract

The present investigation was undertaken to predict 305-days milk yield in Karan Fries cattle based on peak yield and pre-peak period using the 618 lactational milk yield records (305-day/less) of first four parities from 1990 to 2001 for 284 Karan Fries cows maintained at Dairy Cattle Breeding Division of National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal. The 305-days milk yield and peak yield exhibited an increasing trend over the parities. The maximum 305-days milk yield (3890 kg) and peak yield (20.50 kg) were observed in fourth parity while the minimum 305-days milk yield (3170 kg) and peak yield (15.51 kg) were in first parity. The pre-peak period of ranged between 41 days (second parity) and 52 days (fourth parity). The peak yield and pre-peak period explained around 60% of the variability in prediction of 305-day milk yield. The percent average absolute error had a narrow range and ranged between 11.32% in first lactation and 12.82% in fourth lactation.
