Abstract

Data on 493 bunnies belonging to New Zealand White (NZW), Grey Giant (GG), Soviet Chinchilla (SC), Flemish Giant (FG), Californian White (CW) and APAU Black (BL) were analyzed to assess the influence of genetic groups, season of birth and litter size at birth on pre-weaning body weights. The overall least-squares mean body weights at birth, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks of age were 53.62 ± 0.74, 126.50 ± 2.82, 255.48 ± 7.26, 334.67 ± 13.04 and 481.93 ± 17.81 g, respectively. CW bunnies recorded significantly lower body weights at all pre-weaning ages while, bunnies of BL and FG genetic groups recorded significantly higher body weights. Bunnies born during summer and in to smaller litters recorded heavier body pre-weaning body weights.
