Profile of broiler contract farmers and their knowledge level in contract farming

Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic characteristics and knowledge level of contract farmers in broiler contract farming of Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, India. The results of the study revealed that most of the respondents were in middle age group and had secondary school education. Majority of the respondents had broiler farming along with agriculture as their occupation. Medium level of experience was noticed in contract farming. Their annual income, social participation, information seeking behaviour, economic motivation, perception about contract farming and decision making behaviour were in medium level. Majority of the respondents had high risk orientation. Medium level of knowledge was observed among majority of the respondents and all the respondents were aware about concepts, features, agencies involved, inputs supplied and benefitsreceived from contract farming.
