Abstract

The extent of heterosis over mid and better parents was not much pronounced for different traits recorded in four crosses. The estimated heterosis over better parents was significant in desired direction for branches per plant in Pusa falguni x V 269, clusters per plant and pods per plant in Pusa falguni x V 269, GC 1 x RC 8 and GC 2 x V 240, as well as days to 50% flowering and seed yield per plant In cross GC 1 x RC 8. The estimates. of calculated heterosis and inbreeding depression, either significant or non-significant, showed a close agreement to their expected values for majority of the traits which indicated that the estimation of genetic parameters through analysis of generation means, on which expected values was based, has been carried out using most suitable model. The significant heterosis seemed to have resulted either due to action of dominance (h) alone or due to combination of dominance (h) with one, two or three types of epistasis for different traits In four crosses. The inbreeding depression was low to moderate for majority of the characters except days to 50% flowering and seed yield per plant in GC 2 x V 16 and GC 2 x V 240 and resulted either due to action of (h) alone or due to (h) and (l) effects.
