Abstract

Evaluation of 18 genotypes of tomato over 2 years elucidated high heritability with high GCV and genetic gain for average fruit weight, plant height, number of fruits and branches/plant which could be improved by simple selection. The phenotypic and gentoypic associations of yield were significantly positive with number of fruits/plants and days to first harvest but significantly negative with plant height, number of branches/plant and average fruit weight. Number of fruits/plant was inversely related with average fruit weight. Determinate types were high yielders. Most early varieties were small fruited and low yielders. Path analysis confirmed that number of fruits/plant and average fruit weight registered positive direct effect on yield and negative indirect effect through each other on yield. Number of fruits/plant should be considered independently or in combination with average fruit weight and days to first harvest while imposing selection for amelioration of yield in tomato.
