Abstract

An experiment was conducted during 1993–95 to study the effect of introduction of improved grass, legume and fodder tree components on the production and quality of the produce from grassland under mid hill condition of Himachal Pradesh. Fertilizer application increased of native grass species the herbage yield to more than two times as compared to no fertilizer application. The introduction of siratro in the resident vegetation resulted in 22.4 per cent higher fresh yield than fertilizer application. Introduction of setaria combinations (setaria, setaria+siratro, setaria+siratro in between Leucaena/Robinia) proved advantageous from production and quality point of view. Qualitatively the fertilizer application produced herbage with 3.15 per cent higher IVDMD over existing farmers practices. The setaria+siratro in between two hedgerows of Robinia was superior to all other setaria introduced treatments as indicated by higher crude protein and cell contents and low cell wall constituents.
