Abstract

Gel electrophoresis of extracellular enzymes of Bipolaris sorokinina was conducted to determine the isozyme variation. Of the four enzymes evaluated, three enzymes, viz, esterase, catalase and acid phosphatase were found active and resolved well. Remarkable variations were observed in all three enzyme systems. Electrophoretic phenotypes for esterase, catalase and acid phosphatase were 8, 5 and 5, respectively. The band at Rf value 0.55 was found as the unique esterase band. No unique catalase and acid phosphatase bands were detected. A total of 62 overall enzyme phenotypes were identified. Phenotypes of higher frequencies were found to be the representatives of closer to distant different locations indicating random distribution of B. sorokiniana. Cluster analysis of these phenotypes based on Euclidean distance delineated three major groups and two subgroups under each group.
