Abstract

A study was conducted in rice (Oryza sativa L.) to assess the combining ability of the parents as well as hybrids including 8 lines and 8 testers crossed in L x T pattern. The GCA/SCA ratio has indicated that all the eleven characters studied were found to be predominantly controlled by non additive genes. The parents ARC 18023 and ARC 7140 revealed high GCA effects for most of the characters followed by MDU5 and IR64. Among the hybrids ARC 14763 x ASD 16 for productive tillers per plant, ARC 14763 x MDU5, ARC 12194 x AS 90033 for grains per panicle, ARC 14763 x IR 64 for straw yield and ARC 14763 x ASD 16 for grain yield per plant exhibited highest SCA effects coupled with high per se performance.
