A field experiment was carried out in split plot design, replicated thrice with main plot treatments comprised of three irrigation levels and six genotypes of wheat in sub plots. The periodic and seasonal consumptive water use reduced as and when the plants were exposed to water stress. The water stress during reproductive phase could reduce the consumptive use more than the early stress during vegetative phase. The restricted irrigation caused significant reduction in seed yield but the plants showed greater sensitivity to water stress during vegetative phase. The soil moisture extraction decreased with the soil depth. However, the depletion from lower layers was more under stress conditions. Among the genotypes, highest yield and water use efficiency was observed in PBW-343.
