Biparental progenies of three crosses viz., PMK 2/Norungan, PMK 2/Mattaikar and PMK 2/Poongar involving upland rice cultivars were evaluated along with their respective F2 and F3 progenies under direct sown aerobic condition to assess the efficiency of biparental mating. BIPs exhibited higher variability for all characters except root volume in PMK 2/Norungan; all the characters except 100 grain weight, panicle length and root volume in PMK 2/Mattaikar; all the characters except 100grain weight, root volume, grains per panicle and grain yield in PMK 2/Poongar. In addition, high heritability coupled with high genetic advance was exhibited by BIPs for plant height and panicle length in the crosses PMK 2/Norungan and PMK 2/Mattaikar; for productive tillers per plant, grains per panicle and grain yield per plant in all the three crosses.
