Identification of inbred lines having combining ability with high per se performance could be useful in selecting suitable parents for hybridization programme under lower nitrogen (N) application. Among the 10 inbreds analysed, two inbreds UMI 1008 (L1) and UM1 4 (L3) had desirable mean value and general combining ability (gca) effect at N1 (100 kg nitrogen/ha) as well as N2 (200 kg nitrogen/ha) for grain yield per plant. The two inbreds UMI 1008 (L1) and UMI 4 (L3) hold promise for exploitation in breeding programmes for N limited environment.
