Abstract

Chloroplasts are the important plant cell organelles. To study the variation in chloroplast behavior through streptomycin induced bleaching, nine green-gram genotypes were treated with 500, 1000 and 2000 ppm of aqueous streptomycin (SM) solution. Variation in chloroplast behavior was measured in terms of bleaching index (BI). Green-gram genotypes differed in BI values indicating variation in their chloroplast behavior. BI value showed positive correlation (0.708) with yielding ability. The genotypes formed two clusters following the numerical taxonomic approach. The consistency in chloroplast behavior that indirectly indicates adaptation pattern of the genotypes was predicted using relative bleaching response index (RBRI).
