Abstract

This paper presents the development of microcontroller-based noise level monitoring system for classrooms. The aim of this workwas to develop a classroom noise monitoring system that detects noise levels and give visual and audio feedbacks to enable control actions to be taken by learners and teacher. The methodology adopted for the development of the noise level monitoring system for classrooms comprises of analysis, design, implementation, testing, improvement and maintenance. Top down design approach was used for the hardware and program designs. Proteus 8.0 software was used for the hardware design and authentication of the design. AT89C51 microcontroller was used as the control unit and it coordinates all the activities of the system. The program for the microcontroller was written in assembly language while PM-51 Macro assembler was used for assembling and compilation of the program. The microcontroller was programmed using Top win universal programmer. The developed system detects noise levels, displays them and safety instructions to enable control actions to be taken by learners and teachers when levels are not safe for learning and human health. The visual and audio feedback features of the system make learners/students and teachers aware of noise levels in the classrooms and their effects on learning and potential health hazards associated with unsafe levels. It was recommended that system should be adopted for use in classroom in order to create awareness of noise levels and their effects on learning and to enable control of noise in classrooms.
