Abstract

The UAE Ministry of Health recently announced a series of laws on tobacco and these new laws came into force on 21 January. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that a number of tobacco users and venders are directly and indirectly flouting the legislation. This study investigates compliance in restaurants, hotels and other eateries. It is the conclusion of the study that the said bans on smoking could reduce cancer morbidity and mortality, especially those related to trachea, bronchus and lung. It is the further conclusion of this study that a need exists to strengthen the legislation to ban smoking rooms in hotels as hotels are public or major buildings.
