Communication style and learning style of students in higher education institution

Communication in the classroom relies heavily on the communication style of students. The students in tertiary education in the Philippines frequently use English as a means of communication. Communication is the key to the interactions in the process of teaching and learning. The communication style indicates a pattern of how a person organizes his interpersonal relationships and how he interacts in the classroom while learning style deals with one's easy and effective way of learning. Hence, this study primarily investigated the communication styles of students and its relationship to their learning styles. Respondents come from the College of Teacher Education in Cagayan State University. It made use of a descriptive correlational research design with 650 respondents who were identified using random sampling. The Communication Style and Learning style questionnaires are the instruments used in the study. Data reveal that majority of the respondents have a narrator communication style and visual learning style. There is a significant difference in the communication styles of the respondents when grouped according to sex and birth order. There is no significant relationship in the communication style and learning style of the respondents. Thus, other factors can affect communication style aside from learning style. Students from the College of Teacher Education display narrator communicator style where they tend to be people-oriented, thus display a warm, friendly, gentle, and cooperative disposition which make them suited for the teaching profession.
