Abstract

Heartwood and sapwood have different properties and their proportion within the tree will have a significant impact on the utilization of wood. In this research, density and pH value of sapwood and heartwood of Oak (Quercuscastaniefolia) and Maple (Acer velutinum) were studied in the Caspian forest in the north of Iran. The density of sapwood and heartwood in Oak (Quercuscastaniefolia) tree was measured 0.73 and 0.76 gr/cm3, while the density of sapwood and heartwood in Maple (Acer velutinum) tree was measured 0.59 and 0.62 gr/cm3. The results showed that the mean of wood density in heartwood was higher than sapwood in two species. There is not significant differences (α=0.05) between pH value in sapwood and heartwood in two species. The wood pH values in sapwood and heartwood of trees were measured 4.1 to 4.4 and there is no significant differences (α=0.05) between pH value in sapwood and heartwood in two species.
