This paper presents the design and implementation of microcontroller based metal detector. Metal detector is a device which responds to metal at a distance. Metal-detector technology is a huge part of our lives, with a range of uses that spans from leisure to work to safety. The metal detectors in airports, office buildings, schools, government agencies and banks help ensure that no one is bringing a weapon into the premises. In this project, an electronic surveillance system will be considered using a metal detector which after detecting the presence of a metal, sends a message (SMS) or makes a call to a stored security number. The programming language used in this project is mikrobasic. It is uploaded into a microcontroller using a programmable board. The mikrobasic is a type of programming language for microcontrollers and other major programmable electronic devices. When a metal comes close to the metal detector, the microcontroller sends a message through a data cable to GSM cell phone. The data cable acts as an interface between the microcontroller and the cell phone, there is also an interface between the microcontroller and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Satisfactory result based on the design specifications was achieved after construction. This project is recommendable for real life applications, as it offers Security of lives and property which had always been a major concern.
