Investigating the effect of group-work cooperative learning on enhancing learners’ level of autonomy

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to explore the effect of cooperative group work on EFL learners’ autonomy. This research is both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research for using questionnaire and qualitative for taking interview. To fulfill this objective, 30 elementary students who had spent almost 2 years with Four Corner books at Iran Language International Institution in Kermanshah. These students classified into two groups as an experimental and control groups. They were asked to take part in a piloted KET test to acknowledge their level of proficiency and also questionnaire and interview on learner autonomy. After answering questionnaires by both groups, in order to make them comparable, they were coded for statistical analysis. Content analysis was used to analyze questions asked through interview. At the end of the research, a statistically significant difference was found between autonomy questionnaire of experimental group and autonomy questionnaire of control group.
