The aim of the present study is to evaluate wound healing activity at a concentration of 10% w/w in simple ointment of the ethanol extract from Ixora pavetta leaf (EEIPL) belongs to the family Rubiaceae, using excision (normal and Infected wounds), incision and burn wounds which was created on dorsal part of saved rats using a metal rod heated to 80–85°C and exposed for 20 sec. The effects of test sample on the rate of wound healing were assessed by the rate of wound closure, period of epithelialisation and wound breaking strength. The excision wound healing model EEIPL demonstrated significant healing potency compared to control. However, the reference drug povidone iodine ointment exhibited higher potency than the extract. In incision wound model, EEIPL treated animals showed increase in breaking strength when compared with control group. In the infection wound model, EEIPL and neosporin reference standard, possess significiant percentage wound closure activity for both the wounds inoculated with P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The epithelialization period was reduced in the extract treated group and this is equally reflected by the percentage of wound contraction in both normal and infected wounds. Similarly the efficacy of treatment was evaluated based on reduction of burn wound area. The EEIPL treated animals showed significant reduction in the burn wound area.
