Types and causes of students disruptive behavior in a school during practicum: In the case OD elementary school

Abstract

Practicum is the most essential and significant part of the pre-service teacher education program that enables the student -teacher to develop some competences that can best be developed and extended during the school based practicum experience. The students’ disruptive behavior can hinder the effectiveness of the practicum. The aim of this research was tto assess the types and causes of student disruptive behavior in a school during practice of studennt-teacher independent teaching of practicum: In the Case OD elementary School Dambi Dollo Town. This research was conducted in OD elementary school. The participants of the study were all third year student teacher of Dambi Dollo College of teachers college who assigned to this school for practice to teach grade 5 to grade 8 (to otally of 41 students), 12 (mentors who advise student-teacher at school level and 1 principal)), and 47 grade 5 to 8 students of OD elementary schools of the academic year 2015/2016 GC. Purposive sampling techniques were used d. Data were collected using questionnaire, interview and observation. Data from participants were collected at OD elementary school on December to January 2015/2016 G.C. Majority (5 53.66%) of student teachers belonged to the agee group between 21–25 years and the students, 91.49% were belonged to the age 12–18. Gender wise, 65.96% of the students were males. Educationally, 31.92% were grade eight studdents followed by 23.4% were grade five students. Students’ types of disruptive behavior were siilence in group discussion (53.7%), carelessnness (46.3%), and side conservation with peers (43.9%). Students were strongly agreed on the causes of disruptive behavior were poor monitoring of the class (78.7%), lack of counseling (5 59.6%), lack of interest (57.8%) and selfishness of parrents (46.8%). The result interview of school teachers showed that students (91.7%), parents (83.3%), and school and its management (66.7%) were the major responsible for disruptive behavior. Majorities of the students were belonged to adolescents’ stage; the effectiveness of the practicum work during practice is greatly harmed by student's behavior. School-teachers, school management, school facilities, and follows up of college of teachers educational are very crucial. The concerned bodies should interfere to prevent students’ disruptive behavior.
