The hexane and methanolic leaf extracts of Cordia wallichii and Celastrus paniculata were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against clinically important bacteria viz. Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2492), Bacillus subtillis (NCIM 2439), Klebsiella pneumoniae (NCIM 2719) and P. aeruginosa (NCIM 2053) and fungal test organisms including Aspergillus niger (NCIM 616), Aspergillus awamori (NCIM 861), Trichoderma viridae (NCIM 1053) and Trichoderma reesei (NCIM 1062) The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method. The methanolic extracts of both the plants were active against all the investigated bacterial and fungal strains. Phytotoconstituents present included Saponins, Tannins, Alkaloids and Flavonoids. C. wallichii and C. paniculata can be used to source of antibiotic substances for possible treatment of bacterial and fungal infections.
