An assessment of phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of methanolic, ethanolic, chloroformic, petroleum ether and aqueous (hot and cold) extracts of leaves of J. communis against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Klabsiella oxytosa, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli were carried out. Alkaloids, phenolic, flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids were the major phytochemical present. Results obtained showed that all the extracts excepts aqueous (hot and cold) were effective against all the bacterial strains. The chloroformic extract of J. communis leaves was most effective against all the strains and thus displayed highest inhibitory zone of 19.0 mm at the concentration 100 mg/ml. The medicinal values of this plant could be attributed to the presence of one or more of the detected metabolites.
