Objective: To investigate the bone loss, we measured the biochemical markers of bone turnover in postmenopausal women. Immediately after menopause, a dramatic decline in estrogen levels increases the bone turnover rate in postmenopausal women. Many studies evaluated traditional markers of bone metabolism in the Indian postmenopausal women. To understand the sensitivity of bone resorption markers, we compared serum tartrate resistant acid phosphates-5b (sTRAP-5b) and urine carboxy terminal telopeptides of type-I collagen end products (uCTX-I) in south Indian postmenopausal women.
Serum levels of sTRAP-5b, total alkaline phosphatase (sALP) and uCTX-I were analyzed in 96 postmenopausal women (mean age=59.10 years; years since menopause (YSM)=13.593) and 40 premenopausal women (mean age=33.15 years) visiting the out patient department, Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled, Tirupati, India.
The percent increment in sTRAP-5b, uCTX-I and urine Calcium: Creatinine ratio were 180.65, 65.32 and 21.4 reported in postmenopausal women. Significantly increased levels of bone resorption (sTRAP-5b, uCTX-I and uCalcium: Creatinine ratio) (p<0.001) than bone formation (sALP) (p<0.05) were observed in study subjects to their controls.
The increment in the bone resorption markers, sTRAP-5b an osteoclast index and uCTX-I, bone matrix degradation marker were observed in postmenopausal women. uCTX-I was sensitive marker than sTRAP-5b and uCalcium: Creatinine ratio. So, uCTX-I should be considered as sensitive bone resorption marker over sTRAP-5b in the assessment of bone loss in postmenopausal women.
