This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of rice straw treated with exogenous enzyme, steam and or 80 g/kg DM NaOH on rumen fungi growth using quantitative competitive polymerase chain reaction (QC-PCR) technique. Rumen fungi isolates were used to inoculate a culture medium containing rice straw as untreated or treated with enzyme, steam and or NaOH. Fungi growth in culture was determined by QC-PCR. The result showed that growth of rumen anaerobic fungi was greater in the medium containing NaOH treated rice straw in compared with the steam or enzyme treated rice straw and untreated rice straw (+0.85 versus, +0.36, +0.29 and −0.44) (P <0.05). Therefore it is suggested that rumen anaerobic fungi growth and degradation rice straw increased by NaOH, steam and or exogenous enzyme.
