Abstract

Antimicrobial compounds from the Sphaeranthus indicus were extracted with solvents like Ethanol(polar), chloroform (medium polar) and petroleum ether (least polar). Antimicrobial activity of the Sphaeranthus indicus were tested against the selected human pathogens (Bacterial pathogens Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella sp, and Salmonella typhi. Fungal pathogens Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans) by agar well diffusion assay. The chloroform extract of Sphaeranthus indicus produced maximum inhibition against the selected pathogens. Active fraction separated using Thin layer chromatography and with the help of GCMS the molecule identified as 7-hydroxyfrullanolide.
