Abstract

The Kanyakumari District lies at the southern most tip of the Indian Peninsula. It is the smallest district of Tamilnadu. The district has the total area of 1672 sq.kms. It has 2 revenue divisions, 4 taulks, 4 municipalities, 9 blocks, 18 revenue firhas, 81 revenue villages, 7 assembly constituencies and 1 parliamentary constituency. In the district, there are 113 nationalized bank branches, 24 cooperative bank branches, 113 Primary Agriculture Co-operative banks, 33 private sector bank branches and 1 TIIC Branch functioning to provide credit for the development and growth of the district. They finance agriculture, industries and service sectors. They provide loans and advances to all sections of society under different schemes and projects. Every year the district prepares an annual credit plan comprising the overall credit plan of all the banks functioning in Kanyakumari District. They used to measure the achieved results every year. In this study, the annual credit plan after 2005 were collected and the target fixed and achievement made by the commercial banks were studied. The credit provided in agricultural, industries and service sectors were probed. The financial data were collected from the District Administrative Authority for study. This study is an analytical study of the targets achieved from 2006 to 2009 by the commercial banks and deviations were examined with the help of percentage analysis and correlation analysis. This was presented with graphical analysis for better understanding. From this study it was found that between target fixed and achieved during the year 2006 to 2009 for agriculture, industry and service had a marginal relationship i.e. target fixed during these periods were not fully achieved. It is concluded that the targets fixed during these periods were not met. This is vividly presented in this study.
