Odontogenic tumors are lesions derived from epithelial, ectomesenchymal, and/or mesenchymal elements that are, or have been, part of the tooth forming apparatus. The morphological and inductive relationssships between the various parts of the normal tooth germ are reproduced, to a greater or lesser extent, in many of the tumors and tumor-like lesions of the odontogenic tissues. Thus the observation of these features is important both in the identification of these lesions and in their classification. Classification of odontogenic tumors started developing over 150 years. Because it is difficult to group the diverse morphological characteristics of odontogenic tumors in one comprehensive system there has yet been no satisfactory classification of such neoplasms.
