Cheiloscopy: A potential tool in sex determination

Abstract

Background: Establishing a person's identity in post-mortem scenarios can be a very difficult process. Dental records, fingerprint and DNA comparisons are probably the most common techniques used in this context, but under certain circumstances, they cannot always be used; sometimes it is necessary to apply different and less known techniques. Cheiloscopy, the study of lip prints, is an upcoming tool for the identification of persons.

Objective: The aim of the study was to highlight the importance of lip prints in sex determination related to forensic investigation for identification.

Method: Study was conducted on 200 dental students which include 100 males and 100 females. Lip prints were collected and analyzed as per Tsuchihashi's classification.

Results: No two lip prints matched with each other, thus establishing the uniqueness of lip prints. Type I and II were most common in females and type III and IV pattern were seen most commonly in males.

Conclusion: The present study is able to convey that lip prints behold the potential of determination of the sex.
