The clinical appearance of healthy periodontal tissue differs from subject to subject. The identification of gingival biotype may be important in clinical practice since difference in gingival and osseous architecture exhibit significant impact on the outcome of restorative therapy. Different methods to identify gingival thickness are present with their limitations.
The aim of the present study is therefore to identify the existence of gingival biotype in large sample using new simple visual method based on transparency of periodontal probe through gingival margin.
Total 506 samples were evaluated. Five clinical parameters included were: crown width/crown length ratio, papilla height, gingival width, gingival thickness and probing depth.
Result showed correlation coefficient of 0.60, 0.61 and 0.63 respectively between probe transparency and probing pocket depth, papilla height and crown height was found to be strong.
The use of this simple and reliable method to identify gingival biotype in clinical practice would be advantageous to tune the treatment for individual and predict its specific outcome.
