Abstract

Biocompatibility aids in ensuring the health of patients and practitioners. Issues related to it can be linked to the legal liability of dentists. A knowledge regarding biocompatibility of commonly used dental materials is important so to critically judge advertising claims by the manufacturers.

Articles from 1942–2015 were studied and relevant articles were included in this review.

The PubMed database search revealed that the reference list for biocompatibility of dental materials featured 1970 articles. A forward search was undertaken on selected articles, author names and contemporary dental material text.

Review articles on biocompatibility and commonly used dental materials were included. Articles from 1942–2015 were taken into consideration.

It is the duty of each dentist to do the treatment planning after evaluating whether the benefits of the material being used outweigh the risks for the patient under consideration.
