Dry eye is a multi-factorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance and tears film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface, and accompanied by increase tear film osmolality and inflammation.
To determine the prevalence of dry eye disease in patients presenting with symptoms
suggestive of dry eye disease in Hapur district, U.P. India.
It was a cross sectional study and was undertaken among people with age 30 or >30 years, attending general ophthalmic clinic in a tertiary eye hospital. Schirmer-1 test, Tear film break -up time (TBUT), Rose Bengal (RB) staining and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) were studied in all selected patients.
Dry eye disease was slightly higher among women (51.49%) than in men (48.51%). With symptoms suggestive of dry eye disease and at least two positive signs (TBUT <10seconds, Schirmer1 test with reading 5 or >5mm within 5 minutes, RB staining (van Bijsterveld score: 4 or more and Miebomian Gland Dysfunction), the prevalence of dry eye was 132 (65.35%). Different grades of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) were detected in subjects 100 (49.50%). The prevalence of dry eye disease was higher among respondents belonging to rural areas of Hapur District, located in western Utter Pradesh of India. The common presenting symptoms were watering, burning and discomfort. The risk was higher with age, female gender. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is found to be common among dry eye disease subjects.
Dry eye disease was found more among rural population, women and persons more than fifty years. The patients under treatment for arthritis and hypertension were found to be associated with some form of dry eye disease. Therefore early detection and timely management of this syndrome is important.
