Lipid Profile and Insulin Resistance in Subclinical Hypothyroid Subjects in Eastern U.P. Region

Abstract

The term subclinical hypothyroidism applies to mildly elevated serum Thyroid stimulating hormone and normal levels of serum FT4 and FT3. The prevalence of Subclinical hypothyroidism has been reported to be between 4 and 10% of adult population samples. In the patients found to have elevated TSH level, approximately 75% have values lower than 10 mIU/L (mild subclinical hypothyroidism). The study was undertaken to evaluate lipid profile and insulin resistance in subclinical hypothyroid subjects in this region.

The effect of insulin in absence of thyroid hormone also affect lipid metabolism of the body which may lead to various lipid disorders. Hence to fulfill the aim of study we have taken the objectives to correlate the clinical findings in subclinical hypothyroid subjects with biochemical parameters

The present study was carried out in 300 human subjects, out of which 200 were suffering from Subclinical hypothyroidism and 100 age matched healthy controls or euthyroid subjects.

We found significantly increased (p<0.001) insulin resistance and in lipid profile TC, TG and LDL-C were found to be highly significant (p<0.001) in SCH group as compared to the euthyroid group.

These observations lead to the conclusion that subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Hence, these subjects are more prone to cardio-vascular disorders but thyroxin therapy could alleviate this situation.
