Prevalence and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Isolates at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Western Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates in various samples.

The study was conducted on 180 staphylococcus isolates recovered from various samples such as blood, nasal, pus, urine, environmental, respiratory and semen. The organisms were isolated by conventional culture methods and identified by conventional biochemical methods. The antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was determined by Kirby- Bauer disc diffusion method on Muller-Hinton agar and automated method.

Among the 133 S.aureus isolates, 77 (57.9%) were methicillin resistant (MRSA) and 56 (42.1%) were methicillin sensitive (MSSA). Staphylococcus aureus isolates from semen showed the highest percentage of MRSA followed by nasal and urine samples. MRSA isolates demonstrated highest sensitivity to linezolid and glycopeptide antibiotics.

Our study shows a moderately high prevalence of MRSA among S.aureus isolates. Accurate identification of MRSA and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern is necessary for selection of appropriate therapy.
