Coverage of Typhoid Vi Polysaccharide Vaccine and Prevalence of Typhoid Fever in Children Aged 2 - 5 Yrs in two Urbanized Villages of East Delhi

Abstract

To assess prevalence of typhoid fever in children aged 2-5yrs and coverage of typhoid Vi polysaccharide vaccine in Dallupura and Gazipur, two urbanized villages of East Delhi.

Typhoid is an important public health problem occurring in all parts of the world where water supplies and sanitation are substandard. In the current scenario of public health system prevailing in India amongst various approaches to prevention, vaccination appears to be the most cost effective approach.

A cross-sectional community based survey was carried out at Gazipur and Dallupura between January to March 2009 in 1496 children aged 2–5 years using a pretested semistructured questionnaire.

The study results reveal that only 24.1% of children had received typhoid vaccine. 6.6% children complained of fever lasting for >5 days in the past 6 months. Prevalence of typhoid in the study population was 18 per 1000. Majority of children were diagnosed as suffering from typhoid on the basis of either Blood culture (52.6%) or Widal Test (31.6%) and had received oral medication for a duration of 1- 5 days.

The study concludes that prevalence of typhoid is significant and coverage of typhoid vaccine in the target group was not up to the mark mainly due to non availability of vaccine during the study period.
