Family planning is a way of thinking and living that is adopted voluntarily depends on the awareness, knowledge and attitude. The National Family Planning Program in India was established in 1952 due to increasing concern over the rapidly growing population. Lack of awareness of contraceptive methods or source of supply, cost and poor accessibility are the barriers that exist in developing countries.
A cross sectional study among 372 women was conducted in reproductive age group in randomly selected eight villages of Devarayasamudra Primary Health Centre with a pretested validated questionnaire.
65.32% of women opined that there is a need of Family planning. The most common source of information i.e. 34.68% were from Government hospitals, the other sources of information were friends and relatives in 18.28% and 8.87% mass media respectively. 63.71% of women were aware that family planning services were available at Government hospitals/PHC/PHU and only 34.14% were aware that these facilities are available even at Private Hospitals and clinics.
Women education and counseling of couples play an important role to adopt family planning methods and also to increase their knowledge and awareness regarding family planning.
