Prevalence and Risk Profile of NAFLD

Abstract

NAFLD is a common form of chronic Liver disease, which progresses from benign steatosis to steohepatitis, cirrhosis of Liver and hepatic neoplasia. Majority of patient remain asymptomatic despite progressive Liver disease.

The Present study was done to find out the prevalence and risk profile of NAFLD in General Population.

Study Design - A population based prospective study was done over 1 ½ year. A total number 350 patients of both gender were included in the study after informed consent and ethical clearance. All patients were selected only by strictly following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Anthropometry, Biochemical test and USG were done to detect NAFLD in Study group.

The prevalence of NAFLD among males were higher than females (38.09% vs 25%) in patients between 41–45 years of age, prevalence was 49.24%. Highest prevalence were among patient with Type- II DM 55.8% and longer duration of type - II DM (11–15 years) 81.25%. Overall prevalence NAFLD was 32.8% in present study.

High Prevalence of NAFLD among diabetics is alarming. Public health initiative and preventive strategies hold key to halt or reverse the pandemic of Type-II DM and obesity and possibly NAFLD.
