A Prevalence Study of Depression among Physiotherapy Students in Pune

Abstract

Depression is a common but serious mental illness typically marked by sad or anxious feelings. According to WHO by 2020 Depression would be 2nd most prevalent condition world wide.2 There is considerable evidence that rates of Depression and suicide are high in medical students.

A sample size of 400, Undergraduate Physiotherapy students and interns were taken into consideration. All the sampleswere asked to complete the Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) scale.

Using ANOVA statistical method, The result showed the prevalenceof 21.4% with varying severity of depression amongPhysiotherapy students.

This study concludes that the prevalence of depression is considerable i.e. 21.4% in undergraduate physiotherapy students, and are gradually increasing from first year to Internship course.
