Circulating Levels of C-Peptide (Pancreatic Marker of Insulin Secretion) in Cervical Cancer

Abstract

Cancer cervix is the most common cancer in women in developing countries like India. A number of studies have linked insulin resistance/C-peptide levels with endometrial cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. In the current study an attempt has been made to evaluate correlation between C-peptide (as endogenous maker of insulin secretion) & cervical cancer.

In this case-control study, we measured plasma C-peptide levels in cases and control subjects. 36 histologically proven carcinoma cervix cases (16 cases of Stage-I and 20 cases of Stage-II cancer cervix) and 41 controls matched with age & menopausal status and without evidence of adenocarcinoma cervix were included in the present study. Plasma levels of C-peptide were measured using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay while statistical analysis was performed using SPSS.

Case subjects had statistically significant decrease in plasma mean values of C-peptide then control subjects [(3.69 ng/ml; 95% CI =3.08–4.30 ng/ml in cancer cases) versus (5.03 ng/ml; 95% CI = 4.36–5.70 ng/ml in controls)]; P = 0.004. Highest number of cases were observed in 1st quartile and lowest in 4th quartile with evidence of a significant trend (P=0.03).

C-peptide levels were found to be significantly reduced in non-obese, non-diabetic cancer cervix.
