Sedentary life style, decreasing physical activities leads to increasing weight of an individual. Obesity is known to adverse health effects on respiratory system as well. Overweight people characterised with the same is not well defined.
Overweight people were enrolled for the study and compared with normal healthy adults having BMI (18.5–24.99 kg/m2). Body mass index of them was calculated with their height and weight. Spirometric method was used to assess the pulmonary functions e.g. FVC, FEV1, PEFR, and FEF25–75.
overweight people were characterised by lower respiratory functions. There was significant difference (<0.001) in the BMI between both the groups. FEV1/FVC ratio was significantly different between the groups and was positively correlated with BMI in overweight group. Other Parameters were significantly negatively correlated with BMI in Overweight population.
This study suggested that overweight people also characterised by altered respiratory functions due to mechanical effect of increasing BMI on the lungs and lipid deposition on structure of the airways.
