Study of Changes in Carotid Intima Media Thickness in Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Type- 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a growing pan metabolic disorder worldwide. It is invariably associated with alteration in lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. Diabetes leads to both micro and macro vascular complications. For assessment of macro vascular complications carotid intimae media thickness (CIMT) is measured. The present study was done to find out the frequency of changes in carotid intimae media thickness in diabetics.

To study the changes in carotid intimae media thickness in patients of different age groups with diabetes mellitus type II.

A Population based prospective study was done over 1 years at Santosh Hospital, Ghaziabad. 60 patients of both gender in the age group of 30–70 years of type-2 Diabetes Mellitus were included in the study after getting formal consent and ethical clearance.

This study reveals that mean CIMT is normal (≤ 0.8mm) in 25% cases in group A as compared to 0% cases in group B and 85% cases in group C whereas 75% cases in group A had increased CIMT as compared to 100% cases in group B and only 15% cases in Group C. This analysis is significant at p< 0.05.

It has been observed that CIMT is higher in more than 70% of the cases of the diabetic groups. The values are significantly more in the hypertensive diabetics group as compared to diabetes alone and much more significant as compared to the control group.
