When people with lung TB cough, sneeze or spit, they propel the TB germs into the air. Globally there were an estimated 9.6 million new cases of TB in 2014. There were an estimated 3.2 of TB in children and 140,000 deaths. In 2012 more than 10 million children were orphaned as a result of their patient's death from TB. India is the country with the highest burden of TB, with World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics for 2013 giving an estimated incidence figure of 2.1 million cases of TB for India out of a global incidence of 9 million. The estimated TB prevalence figure for 2013 is given as 2.6 million. It is estimated that about 40% of the Indian population is infected with TB bacteria, the vast majority of whom have latent rather than active TB. In Tamil Nadu smear positive patients diagnosed are 45, 404 in 2013.
To determine the prevalence of Tuberculosis in patient's attainding TB opd at SMIMS.
Study Design was cross sectional study. Done during June 2015 to December 2015 at TB OPD, Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences, Kulasekharam, District Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India. Total sample size was 150. Inclusion Criteria was all age, both sex and willing. Sampling technique was cluster sampling. Data is entered in Microsoft excel version 2013. Analysis is done in SPSS 20.0 trail version software. Statistical test used are mean, SD, student t test. Institutional Ethical committee clearance was obtained.
In our study total males were 53.09% and females were 46.91% with mean age of male and female were 23.6+-1.68 and 24.22+_1.62. Point prevalence of TB cases found in the participants was 4.07%. Males were having higher prevalence of TB 5.5% in comparison to females 3.7%. This difference was statistically not significant (Z=0.31, p>0.05). Culture positive case prevalence of tuberculosis is 2.97%. The prevalence of Tb among Hindu was 4.5% and among Christians was 3.7%.
Smear positive Tuberculosis cases was 64.5% in age group 15–44 years. Culture positive case prevalence of tuberculosis is 2.97%. Prevalence of culture positive pulmonary tuberculosis was 29.8% in cultivator. Point prevalence of TB cases found in the participants was 4.07%.
