Effect of Thyrotropin on Lipid Fractions in Subclinical Hypothyroidism

Abstract

Subclinical hypothyroidism is characterised by dyslipidemia is controversial due to variation in the result in the past. The effect of TSH range is not well defined.

Newly diagnosed SCH patients were selected for the study and compared with healthy controls. The SCH patients were divided into two groups on the basis of TSH range. Serum TSH, FT4, and T3 was measured by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Total cholesterol, Triglycerides and HDL-Cholesterol was measured by CHOD/POD method, GPO-PAP method and CHOD-POD/Phosphotungstate method respectively. LDL-Cholesterol was calculated by using Friedewald formula.

SCH patients were characterized by altered lipid profile and there was significant difference between the SCH and control group. SCH group II (TSH >10.0 μIU/ml) were characterized by more alteration in lipid parameters comparing to SCH-I (<10.0 μIU/ml). Total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol was significantly different between the SCH groups. But the level of Triglycerides and HDL-Cholesterol was not significant.

SCH patients are characterized by dyslipidemia. People with TSH >10.0 μIU/ml have higher risk of future development of cardiovascular risk. Moreover, SCH patients with TSH <10.0 μIU/ml should be carefully monitored.
