Proper breastfeeding practices are effective means of reducing childhood morbidity and mortality. Many mothers understand the importance of breastfeeding, others are less aware of the benefits of breastfeeding.
The aim of the study was to assess knowledge and attitude of the mothers and practice of exclusive breastfeeding in Meerut UP, India.
This study reveals that the breastfeeding knowledge, attitude and practices about exclusive breastfeeding were poor among mothers of urban area of Meerut. Among the well informed mothers; a few did not practice it willingly because of lower socio-economic status, parity and socio-cultural practices.
Misconceptions regarding exclusive breastfeeding practices can be overcome only by imparting proper information and knowledge to the parents. Maternal illiteracy could be associated with delayed inappropriate breast-feeding practices.
