To compare clinical, biochemical and hormonal profile of age and BMI matched women with and without Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
Women attending Gynaecology OPD over a period of 18 months were screened for PCOS on the basis of Rotterdam criteria. Women with thyroid disorder, Hyperprolactinaemia, Cushing's syndrome, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Androgen secreting tumors, Diabetes mellitus and those with history of taking oral contraceptives, metformin or other insulin sensitizer drugs in the last 3 months, were excluded from the study. Clinical, hormonal and biochemical parameters of women with PCOS and equal number of age and BMI matched non PCOS women were compared.
380 women between 20–40 years were screened and 323 were recruited in the study; out of this 50 (15.48%) women were diagnosed as PCOS by Rotterdam criteria. From the 273 non PCOS subjects 50 age and BMI matched women were included in the non PCOS group. Acne and hirsutism was observed in significantly higher number of PCOS women, p-0.003 & <0.001, respectively. Serum LH, DHEAS & Testosterone levels were significantly higher in women with PCOS, p-<0.001. Blood sugar and S insulin levels in PCOS and age & BMI matched non PCOS were comparable and so were the parameters studied for insulin resistance.
Clinical and biochemical hyperandrogenism is common in PCOS women, however, age and BMI matched PCOS women are not at additional risk of insulin resistance.
