Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in females and this is the most common bacterial infections during pregnancy. Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is the presence of bacteria in urine without apparent symptoms. The importance of asymptomatic bacteriuria lies in that, it is a major risk factor for the development of urinary tract infections during pregnancy, and with further risk of preterm birth & pyelonephritis if left untreated.
The study includes 823 pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria over a period of 11 months in Microbiology department JLNMC Bhagalpur. The midstream urine samples of these women were subjected to microscopy, culture and antibiotic sensitivity.
Out of 823 samples collected significant bacteriuria was found in 80 (9.7%) cases. The most common age group affected 26–35 years 48 cases (60%). Escherichia coli were the common organism isolated at 75%. The majority of the organisms were sensitive to imipenem and pipercillin-tazobactum (100%).
Asymptomatic bacteriuria is common in pregnant women. All pregnant women should be screened by urine culture to detect asymptomatic bacteriuria at their first visit to prevent UTI & other complications to both mother & fetus.
