Hypoalbuminemia is a frequent and early biochemical derangement in critically ill patients. The study objective was to evaluate the incidence of hypoalbuminemia in critically ill patients and to correlate the occurrence of low serum albumin with mortality and morbidity.
This study is a hospital based, prospective cohort study conducted from May 2015 to September 2016 in ICU of the Department of Medicine, Jayarogya Group of Hospitals Gwalior (M.P.)India, a teaching tertiary care hospital. 50 Patients were selected as critically ill on the basis of SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment). Patients of score ≥7 were included and their serum albumin was estimated. These patients were monitored during their stay in hospital & a correlation of serum albumin level with mortality and morbidity was done.
In present study incidence of hypoalbuminemia was 82%. Patients with low serum albumin had higher mortality rate (65.85% vs 22.22%) compared to patients with normal serum albumin (P<0.05). With serum albumin 2.5–3.4g/dl, number of patients with long hospital stay(7 days or more) was high 75%vs14.29%; with serum albumin <2.5g/dl, number of patients with long hospital stay was higher 100%vs14.29% when compared with normal serum albumin patients. (Chi square=11.3; df=2; P <0.005).
Hypoalbuminemia is a frequent finding in critically ill patients and can be used as an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality.
