Abstract

Role of vitamin D in bone and mineral homeostasis has been well established. Both Vitamin D and thyroid hormone act through steroid receptors and may affect each other's action as they have similar response elements on genes. In India, despite of ample sunlight prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency has been documented among all the age groups. It is still unclear any association exists between hypothyroidism and Vitamin D insufficiency.

We aim to estimate the levels of Vitamin D in the hypothyroid patients so as to clarify the relation between TSH and Vitamin D levels.

Serum vitamin D (25-OH) levels were measured in 92 patients with hypothyroidism and 104 healthy subjects, utilizing the CLIA method. Vitamin D deficiency was designated at levels lower than 20 ng/ml. Thyroid hormones (TSH, T3 and T4) levels were evaluated in all participants.

Vitamin D levels were significantly lower in hypothyroid patients (17.9 ± 5.13 ng/ml) compared to controls (40.6 ± 8.1 ng/ml), p < 0.001. A negative and significant correlation was observed between Vitamin D and TSH levels (r= -0.48, p < 0.001).

Our study concludes that patients of hypothyroidism suffered from Vitamin D deficiency.
