Anemia is more common in diabetic population as compared to general population. And coexistence of anemia with diabetes poses more complications.
To characterize the anemia in diabetes patients, patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus attending medicine OPD were included in the study. Total number of study population was 200. Complete hemogram, ESR, serum ferritin were estimated from all subjects.
67% of the total study population had type 2 diabetes with anemia. Maximum patients (43%) had microcytic hypochromic type of anemia. 85.6% patients had anemia due to chronic disease and iron deficiency.
Our study concluded that large fraction of type 2 diabetes population had anemia of chronic disease and iron deficiency anemia.
