Infections due to the HIV, HBV, and HCV are major public health problems worldwide. An unsafe blood transfusion is very costly from both economic and human points of view. We carried out a retrospective study from January 2011 to December 2015 at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna. All blood donors registered at the blood bank during the study period were included in the study. Of the 34,945 donors recruited for the study, the age & sex of 34,909 (99.89%) donors were available while HIV, HBV, HCV tests were conducted in all (100%) donors. Total number of positive donors in our study during the study period was: HIV = 28 (0.08%); HCV = 82 (0.23%); HBsAg = 428 (1.22%). Seropositivity is higher in male patients in our study. Male preponderance of HIV & HCV seropositivity may also be due to promiscuity in men working away from family & home.
