Knowledge of variations in anatomy among South Indian population in the inter foramen area to help in treatment planning, local anesthesia and to avoid iatrogenic injury during implant placement.
To determine the position of the mental foramen in partially edentulous South Indian population, using CBCT.
Eighty mandibular cone beam computed tomography files were examined in this study. The distance from the anterior border of mental foramen to the skeletal midline (LR,LL)and distance from inferior most part of mental foramen to the inferior border of mandible(IBM) (HR, HL) was recorded on both sides, using CBCT images. Variations among side and gender were analyzed.
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v 22.0.0.0 software and paired t test and independent samples t test was used.
Of the 80 CBCT images, a total of four mandibles, exhibited accessory mental foramen unilaterally (5%). The mean height of HR was 10.044mm (±1.59), whereas HL was 9.965mm (±1.60). The mean LR was 24.684mm (±2.18), and LL was 24.36mm (±2.65).
The mean distance from the inferior border of mental foramen to the inferior border of mandible exhibited sexual dimorphism on the right side but there was no sex dimorphism in the distance from the anterior border of mental foramen to midline.
